Book 6: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) by J. K. Rowling. (Published July 16, 2005.)

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth in J. K. Rowling's enthralling series, takes us through Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The O.W.L. results arrive and plans are adjusted.

In addition to the core characters, with the Fred and George and their thriving WWW (Weaseleys' Wizard Wheezes) joke shop, one of whose windows advertises:

 WHY ARE YOU WORRYING ABOUT
      YOU-KNOW-WHO?
YOU SHOULD BE WORRYING ABOUT
        U-NO-POO -
 THE CONSTIPATION SENSATION
 THAT'S GRIPPING THE NATION

More peripheral favorites return like pink-haired Tonks and the silver-haired Fleur (or Phlegm as Hermione and Ginny call her). Neville and Luna are there, though more as afterthoughts; I could have done with a bit more of them, but am grateful for at least hearing Luna as a Quidditch commentator. Draco is back, and startlingly inept, which keeps him mysteriously busy for most of the school year.

New characters include:

  1. New Fenrir Greyback, an extremely nasty werewolf.
  2. New Horace Slughorn, a slimy past head of Slytherin, and his Slug Club for his favorites.
  3. New Rufus Scrimgeour, the new and hypocritical Minister of Magic (replacing Cornelius Fudge).
  4. New Voldemort's parents.

Sadly, though it was inevitable, the students begin learning nonverbal spells because, as Hermione says (CH. 9):
Your adversary has no warning about what kind of magic you are about to perform, ... which gives you a split-second advantage.

Fortunately for lovers of verbal Magic, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) gives us lessons in use of:

Editorial Reviews from Amazon (snapshot Jan 23, 2005):

"From the Publisher

In the fifth and most recent book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5), the last chapter, titled 'The Second War Begins,' started:

'In a brief statement Friday night, Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge confirmed that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has returned to this country and is active once more.

"It is with great regret that I must confirm that the wizard styling himself Lord - well, you know who I mean - is alive among us again," said Fudge.'

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince takes up the story of Harry Potter's sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at this point in the midst of the storm of this battle of good and evil.

The author has already said that the Half-Blood Prince is neither Harry nor Voldemort. And most importantly, the opening chapter of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has been brewing in J.K. Rowling's mind for 13 years."

Pity about the typos [e.g. "The site [S.B. SIGHT], therefore, of Fudge stepping out of the fire ..."]

Book 5: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5) by J. K. Rowling.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth in J. K. Rowling's enthralling series, is a welcome book. Surely most of the western world has been longing to know what becomes of Harry in his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and in the start of his difficult transition into adulthood.

Book 4: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) by J. K. Rowling.

For a special treat, check out the original English BBC recording by Stephen Fry of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4)". Stephen Fry's skillful voice presents each character as delightfully unique.

In the summer of his 14th birthday, Harry Potter has two more weeks with his Muggle relatives before returning to Hogwarts School. After Harry has an upsetting vision, he contacts his godfather for advice. It is probable that Lord Voldemort and his "Death Eaters" plan murder.

Book 3: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) by J. K. Rowling.

In the summer of his 13th birthday, Harry Potter again endures the holidays with his horrid Dursley aunt, uncle, and cousin. Harry uses his magic to convert Aunt Marge into an enormous floating balloon. Fearing punishment from his uncle and officials at Hogwarts or "the Ministry of Magic" for unauthorized use of magic in the Muggle world, Harry escapes.

Book 2: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2) by J. K. Rowling.

Harry in danger when he and Ron miss the train to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin their second year. Ron "borrows" his Dad's magical flying car to get to Hogwarts. Arriving at school exhausted, the car crash-lands on the "Whomping Willow", which is furious with them.

Book 1: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1) by J. K. Rowling.
The rest of the world knows history and philosophy that is ignored in the USA, and knows this book as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Book 1).

Harry leads a resilient life, tormented by the Dursleys, the relatives he lives with. But on Harry's 10th birthday, the giant Hagrid forces his way into Harry's life with the acceptance letter saying: "We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry."

Leaving the "Muggle world" of non-wizards, Harry enters the wizard world. There he discovers he is famous, having defeated the evil wizard Voldemort (who killed his mother and father), leaving a lightning-bolt scar on Harry's forehead.
