With the new year, new meeting space and new day, we had a small but enthusiastic group in attendance at the meeting on January 4th. To celebrate the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, Jeanette Hines facilitated a presentation and discussion of the video, "Legislating a Tragedy." In a sensitive and poignant interview, two women talked about their planned pregnancies, described the horror they felt upon learning, in their seventh month of pregnancy, that tests revealed serious medical complications and described their heartbreaking decision to terminate their pregnancies. Both women emphasized the importance of the availability of this option and procedure. This film was a good reminder that the decision to terminate a pregnancy belongs primarily to women with the support of their families and doctors. No one else has the right to make that decision. Unfortunately, Congress is attempting to do just that by making this procedure illegal. We are reminded again that we must not let the opposition strategy of restricting and eliminating abortion options be successful. Other NOW news -- Save the date for the national NOW march and rally to be held in San Francisco this year on Sunday, April 14th. If you've always wanted to go to the marches in Washington, DC, but haven't had the opportunity to get there, here is your chance. Plans are underway to charter buses, so it couldn't be easier, we'll have lots of fun on the way and we will be inspired and renewed by all that positive, feminist energy! A reminder: General meetings are now the first Thursday of the month at Kids Klub, 191 Harvey West Park Blvd., Santa Cruz (behind Costco). Hope to see you at our next meeting on February 1st.

Please email Henry Mello's office ASAP and thank him for his committee vote against SB250, a bill that would have required doctors to warn women against the "hazards" of having an abortion. Informed consent is all well and good; however, this bill is just a way to control doctors and other health care providers in practicing medicine. It is also an attempt to exaggerate the risks of abortion without informing of the greater risks of carrying a fetus to term. This vote emphasizes the need to keep a pro-choice Senator in Henry's seat this election. Contact Senator Mello's office by calling 425-0401, or faxing 425-5124, or via e-mail at senator.mello@sen.ca.gov
