What's New at WaveGuide

WWW.WAVE-GUIDE.ORG is now on-line, with greatly expanded features to be implemented over the next couple weeks, [5-5-99].

A lot has been happening. There are a lot of new sites. There are new issues. But we are starting to make friends.

Now would be a good time for any feedback you might have about site content, organization or design. You can mail to me at rbedard@cruzio.com with any comments, questions, or recommendations.

New Resources The idea behind What's New at WaveGuide, is to put things in one place that frequent visitors might find of interest, and to have a place for ACTION ITEMS that require timely attention. Hopefully, I'll keep things here for no longer than 30 days. (You'll notice I have failed miserably in this ...)

Rachel's Environment and Health Weekly More from Rachel's
Rachel's is an excellent publication devoted to Environmental Health issues. The above link links to their main index page, below are two more selected issues that address how Science, Politics, PR, and Funding are currently affecting Environmental Policy in the US.

  • Rachel's 539:HISTORY OF PRECAUTION, PART 1 "Because of international laws developed during the WW II Nuremburg Trials, controlled experiments on humans are no longer permitted. Therefore, evidence of hormone disruption must be gathered by observing effects in wildlife, by experimenting on laboratory animals, and by observing "natural experiments," which occur when workers are exposed to chemicals on the job, or when large numbers of people are exposed to pharmaceuticals that are mistakenly thought to be safe."
  • Rachel's 540:HISTORY OF PRECAUTION, PART 2 "The period of greatest lead use was 1945-1971, after which it began to decline. In those years, 165,000 to 275,000 TONS of lead dust spewed from the exhaust pipes of American automobiles EACH YEAR. Americans born during these years have 300 to 1000 times as much lead in their bodies as pre-Columbian indigenous people had.[7] Thus the generation of decision-makers in power today --in government and in corporations --is made up of people who are suffering mental irritability and disfunction as a result of severe chronic lead insult. Reviewing the history of the past 25 years, it seems clear that the nation and the world have already paid a terrible price for their irritability and disfunction. Leadership by the most lead-damaged (those born around 1970) lies just ahead."
  • Rachel's 542:ACTIVIST MOM WINS GOLDMAN PRIZE "One of the main lessons I have learned from the WTI experience is that we are losing our democracy. How have I come to this sad realization? Democracy is defined by Merriam Webster as "government by the people, especially rule of the majority," and "the common people constituting the source of political authority." The definition of democracy no longer fits with the reality of what is happening in East Liverpool, Ohio. For one thing, it is on the record that the majority of people in the Ohio Valley do not want the WTI hazardous waste incinerator in their area, and they have been opposed to the project from its inception. Some of our elected officials have tried to help us, but the forces arrayed against us have been stronger than we or they had imagined. Public concerns and protests have been smothered with meaningless public hearings, voodoo risk assessment and slick legal maneuvering. Government agencies that were set up to protect public health and the environment only do their job if it does not conflict with corporate interests. Our current reality is that we li ve in a "wealthocracy"--big money simply gets what it wants. In this wealthocracy, we see three dynamics at play: corporations versus the planet, the government versus the people, and corporate consultants or "experts" versus common sense. In the case of WTI, we have seen all three."

  • Rachel's 534:Lies in Defense of Humanism "The stories from the major modern religions agree: the purpose of the creation of the Earth was to provide a home for humans and the purpose of evolution was to evolve modern humans, after which evolution stopped. In this view, because the Earth was created for humans, the Earth is specially adapted to taking care of human needs. East, West, capitalist or communist, everyone could agree on this. The world was created for us to exploit, and exploiting it actually IMPROVED it."
  • Rachel's 526:Here We Go Again - Rapid Innovation "It seems as if the entire "developed" world is depending on rapid industrial innovation to pull its chestnuts out of the fire. The people who run the permanent government (they're not elected) seem stuck on the idea that tremendous growth will be required to solve the problems of poverty, well-being, and pollution within the U.S. and throughout the world.[1] Even the Brundtland Commission --the prestigious group that coined the phrase "sustainable development" back in 1987 --argued that the world's total economic activity would have to increase 5-fold to 10-fold to lift all humans out of poverty.[2] The need for growth has become an axiom of modern industrial/economic/political life."

EMR Alliance: Cell Tower Siting Mini Public Forum
"In response to the growing demand upon local municipalities to site cellular communications transmission facilities in their communities, and the lack of information on the health, safety, property value and aesthetics issues surrounding such siting proposals, the National League of Cities is sponsoring a two hour "Cell Tower Siting Mini Public Forum" for their members, to address these issues."

NEJM Finds Car Phones Dangerous
"New England Journal of Medicine, Association between Cellular-Telephone Calls and Motor Vehicle Collisions: A total of 26,798 cellular-telephone calls were made during the 14-month study period. The risk of a collision when using a cellular telephone was four times higher than the risk when a cellular telephone was not being used (relative risk, 4.3; 95 percent confidence interval, 3.0 to 6.5)."

[2-13-97]
The HAARP Game
"HAARP is not unique or new technology. It is a continuation of war science discoveries from the 1950's. Chemical weather modification has been in practice since the 1960's. Heater facilities such as HAARP are multi-agency collaborations combining atmospheric chemical release projects with electromagnetic beam experiments. Add to this devil's brew, a dangerous mix of atmospheric experiments designed to couple ionospheric & geomagnetic fields and earth penetrating electromagnetic invasions. Has this technology damaged the ozone; caused earthquakes; created unusual weather & storms; impacted human health; contributed to myriad environmental damages and changes?"

ABC News Says NEJM Finds Car Phones Dangerous

ABC News reports that a New England Journal of Medicine report will be released tomorrow that finds the use of cellular phones while driving is as dangerous as driving while drunk. The report is said to be based on a one-year study done at Unversity of Toronto that found users of cellular phones while driving had four times greater chance of collisions. The most "striking observation" was that "hands-free" car-phones offered no statistical safety advantages.

Return of the Dragon: Hazards of Man-made Magnetism
"The Electric Age was born only 164 years ago in Albany, New York, in a red sandstone edifice beside the Capitol of the Empire State. There, in 1829, Joseph Henry harnessed the Principle of Magnetic Induction to build the first electric motor.

"At the turn of the century, at the Empire State's other end, the power of Niagara Falls was harnessed. Spinning magnetic turbines transformed water power into electric fire. A great rush was on to spin complex webs of wires across North America. Soon electric lines led to every factory, office, home, and farm. The Electric Age dramatically and totally transformed America's lifestyles and consciousness -- and the world.

"Few questioned the electric genie's marvelous gifts. Fewer still realized the Dragon is being awakened.

"Three quarters of a century later, in 1974, Dr. Nancy Wertheimer began a study in Denver that linked powerline magnetism to childhood leukemia. Now, after two decades, a vast body of research has revealed man-made electromagnetism (EM) adversely affects many delicate biological processes: bone growth, cell communication, biocycles, blood cells, neurochemistry, genetic replication, immune system, and more. Today, the weight of evidence now reveals our EM genie is assaulting us on all fronts."

The Cancer Conundrum
"In the United States, the alarming statistics concerning cancer are that in a few short years it will surpass heart disease as the predominant cause of death in this country, one in three people will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime, and one in five will die from it. A large proportion of cancer deaths can be attributed to lifestyle factors such as tobacco use and diet and thus are avoidable. Still others may be linked to occupational and environmental exposures that individuals have little or no control over." Very good information at NIH.

CTIA Preemption Update: (See 2-1-97)
" ... the FCC tends NOT to take a strictly legalistic attitude toward the comments it receives from the public, insofar as deadline dates are concerned. What this means, in practical terms, is that if the public learns of a matter before the FCC after the deadline for comment is past, it should go ahead and submit its written comments to the FCC anyway; they will be read and taken into consideration, just as though they had been received by the deadline date, so long as they are received before a final decision is rendered."

CTIA Files Petition to End Local Moratoria
"In a move that epitomizes the arrogance of the cellular communications industry, the Cellular Telecommuniactions Industry Association ("CTIA") filed a Petition For Declaratory Ruling ("Petition") with the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC") on December 16, 1996 seeking preemption of moratoria regulation imposed by state and local governments on siting of telecommunications facilities. CTIA contends in its Petition that such preemption is authorized by Sections 253, 332(c)(3) of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended, 47 U.S.C 253, 332(c)(3) and Section 704(c) of the Telecommunications Act of 1996."

NEMFAC, National Electric and Magnetic Fields Advisory Committee
"We take this action because, after perusal of the pre-publication NAS/NRC report released October 31, 1996, we conclude that neither the press release nor the Executive Summary of the report adequately reflects the conclusions to be found in the body of the report. ... Contrary to reports in the popular press. the NAS/NRC report does not state that extremely low magnetic fields are safe. Rather, the report concludes that there is an unexplained, but statistically reliable and robust association between power transmission and distribution systems and childhood cancer and that continued research is necessary."

Napa Sentinel Mind Control Series
Well-researched report on CIA mind-control experimentation on US citizens. "There was just a small news announcement on the radio in early July after a short heat wave, three inmates of Vacaville Medical Facility had died in non-air conditioned cells. Two of those prisoners, the announcement said, may have died as a result of medical treatment. No media inquiries were made, no major news stories developed because of these deaths. But what was the medical treatment that may have caused their deaths? The Medical Facility indicates they were mind control or behavior modification treatments. A deeper probe into the death of these two inmates unravels a mind-boggling tale of horror that has been part of California penal history for a long time, and one that caused national outcries two decades ago."
