KUSP

KUSP celebrates the Summer Festival
Season with a special week of broadcasts of the Cabrillo Music
Festival and the Carmel Bach Festival. Many concerts can be heard
weekdays at 7:00 pm and Sundays at 11:00 am.
Major music festivals are an annual
treat in the Monterey Bay area. KUSP offers exclusive coverage of the
Carmal Bach Festival, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music,
and the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Sunday, August 19, 11 am, Cabrillo
Festival "Raise the Roof." Marin Alsop and the Festival
Orchestra perform three west coast premieres. Michael Daugherty's
Raise the Roof features Steve Hearn, timpani, and is followed by the
same composer's Ghost Ranch; The concert concludes with John
Corigliano's Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan, with
soprano Amy Burton. Also on the program: "In the Works," performances
of music by composers participating in the student composer
project.
Monday, August 20, 7 pm, Bach
Festival, The Bach Family. Concertmaster Elizabeth Wallfisch
presents a dazzling program of concertos for violin and natural horn,
wth a lament for alto voice sung by Sally-Anne Russell.
Tuesday, August 21, 7 pm, Bach
Festival, Aha! Bach. Maestro Bruno Weil and David Gordon have
a conversation about the majesty and genius of J.S. Bach, illustrated
with music from the Festival Orchestra, Chorale and soloists.
Wednesday, August 22, 7 pm, Bach
Festival, The Mission Concert, "Tenebrae Responsories." The
Festival Chorale presents a program directed by Andrew Megill in a
large a cappella work by Gesualdo.
Thursday, August 23, 7 pm, Cabrillo
Festival "Behind the Notes" and Birthday Encore Recital. An
evening with Marin Alsop and composers/performers including violinist
Mark O'Connor, pianist Kevin Puts, flutist Dave Heath, jazz pianist
Michael Daugherty and electronica star Mason Bates.
Saturday, August 25, 11 am, Cabrillo
Festival Family concert, "Pyramus and Thisbe." The Festival
Orchestra performs James MacMillan's Stomp and Daniel Kellogg's
Pyramus and Thisbe, with Joseph Ribeiro, narrator/actor.
Sunday, August 26, 11 am, Cabrillo
Festival San Juan Day with "Music at the Mission." This grand
finale of the season presents two world premieres and one west coast
premiere. Kenneth Fuchs, United Artists; Aaron Jay Kernis, Valentines
with Susan Narucki, soprano; and Kevin Puts, Symphony No. 4. The
Festival Orchestra is conducted by Marin Alsop.
Monday, August 27, 7 pm, Cabrillo Festival
"Concentric Paths," with Marin Alsop and the Festival
Orchestra performing Mason Bates, Rusty Air in Carolina; Thomas
Adès, Concentric Paths; and Philip Glass, Symphony No. 8.
