Martin Luther King, Jr.

May I become at all times, both now and forever
A protector for those without protection
A guide for those who have lost their way
A ship for those with oceans to cross
A bridge for those with rivers to cross
A sanctuary for those in danger
A lamp for those without light
A place of refuge for those who lack shelter
And a servant to all in need.
**buddhist - prayer of peace

Every day I will try my best to treat myself and others with kindness, compassion, respect, and dignity.

My Goal for My Students

My goal is to provide a positive environment.  I support students in becoming responsible for their academics and behaviors by establishing clear and consistent guidelines. The students are encouraged to be respectful of the school environment.

KEYS TO SUCCESS – WHAT PARENTS/FAMILIES CAN DO TO SUPPORT THEIR KIDS

1. If your child is sick, but well enough to work, arrange to get the homework. (Stop by the classroom between 8 and 2, phone into the office and stop by the office after school, have a neighborhood friend bring the work home, etc.) If your child is going to miss a day and you know in advance, let me know in advance and I can arrange for her/him to take the work home.

2. Check out your student’s grades on the Internet on a weekly basis or have a progress report emailed to you weekly- I can show you how to do this. You have your child’s password – contact the office if you have misplaced it or it isn't working. . If you don’t have an Internet connection at home, come to school to check your child’s grades or go to the public library and use their free computers.

3. Gently remind your child about long-term projects.,

4. Get your student a library card so that she/he can use all the wonderful FREE resources of the public library system.

5. On a daily basis tell your kid how wonderful she/he is. No one ever gets tired of hearing how wonderful she/he is (really!).

6. Buy an excellent dictionary and thesaurus for your student! Make sure they use it - let them see you using it!

7. Communicate with me and with your child.

Homework Policy(top)
Students have homework nightly Mon. through Thurs.:
Finish Math work.
Finish any unfinished class work.
Longer projects as assigned
Students are required  to complete between 45-60 minutes of homework 4 nights per week. If your child is ROUTINELY taking more time than this,  drop me a note so we can figure out what is going on.  Students are responsible for making up within a reasonable time any missed homework.

Grading Policy(top)
Student work is evaluated and is graded according to the criteria that is given prior to an assignment.  Student’s
class work, homework, and test performance are used to create their trimester grades.   Individualized assignments and grading are used when appropriate.  The school year has three grading periods.  The  grading scale is standard: 100%-90% = A, 89%-80%
 = B, 79%-70% = C, 69%-60% = D, 59% and below = F.
If you would like a report on your child’s progress please send a note, call the school, or e-mail me requesting it.  Thanks.

Class Rules (top)
Our class has 4 simple rules. They are:

1. Students will avoid doing anything that interferes with their learning or the learning of others.
2. Students will come to class on time, prepared to work and study.
3. Students will treat other people, other people's property, and school property with respect.
4. Students will listen to and follow directions.

EXPLANATION OF GRADING FOR WRITING

HERE’S HOW I GRADE YOUR WRITING

1.
HEADING: I look at your heading to see if it was done according to my instructions. I especially look to see if you have included your first and last name.
2.
GRAMMAR: I look at whether or not you used words correctly – did you use adverbs, adjectives, nouns, pronouns, and other parts of speech correctly. Did your verb tenses agree (ex: if your writing is in the past tense did you use the past tense of verbs?) Also, did you use paragraphing appropriately?
3.
PUNCTUATION: I look at whether you used ending punctuation and punctuation within each sentence correctly? Did you use apostrophes correctly or did you simply sprinkle them everywhere?
4.
SENTENCE STRUCTURE: I look at whether you presented your ideas in complete sentences that range in form from simple to expanded sentences. I look at whether or not you expressed multiple ideas in one sentence and I look to see if you have any run-on sentences or fragments (non-sentences) in your writing.
5.
CAPITALIZATION: Did you apply the rules of capitalization correctly?
6.
SPELLING: I look to see whether you correctly spelled words that sixth-graders should know. I also think about whether or not you used your PWB information and whether or not you used a dictionary.
7.
WORD USAGE: Did you use words correctly to convey meaning. Did you use a variety of words and stretch yourself to use SPARKLING words? Did you use a thesaurus?
8.
OVERALL NEATNESS: Is your paper neat, is your handwriting readable? There should NEVER be any cross-outs or doodling on a final paper unless it is part of the instructions.
9.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Here is where I tell you what you did well or what needs work.

(Keep this sheet in the writing part of your binder at all times) 10/06

December Traditions Assignment

December Traditions      STARTED ______

(Congratulations on picking a wonderful holiday! Your job is to educate us about your holiday. IF you chose Christmas you MUST tell us about how it is celebrated in at least 2 countries other than the USA.)

Requirements for all projects:

Pretend we have never heard of your holiday. Then,
1. Tell us about the history of your holiday - Use your poster
2. Tell us about the meaning of your holiday - Use your poster
3.
Explain to us/have us do 2 or 3 activities that the people of your country (or countries) do to celebrate your holiday.

A truly wonderful project would include some props, costumes, and any other visual clues about the joys/meaning of your holiday. I will help you but DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO PREPARE. Even though this project is not due until December 18th you should be finished with it before that. A smart idea for your group would be to imagine that this project is due on December 13th.
